New Tech Tuesdays: HARTING Mini PushPull ix Industrial: High-Speed Ethernet in a Robust Design Rudy Ramos

New Tech Tuesdays

Join Rudy Ramos for a weekly look at all things interesting, new, and noteworthy for design engineers.

This week’s New Tech Tuesday explores the key features of an innovative solution from HARTING, the Mini PushPull ix Industrial® connectors, which offer numerous benefits to industry professionals looking for cutting-edge connectivity solutions.

The Newest Products for Your Newest Designs®

The Mini PushPull ix Industrial series from HARTING represents a leap forward in Ethernet interface technology. These connectors are designed for demanding applications and offer superior performance in a miniaturized, robust form factor. The series is engineered to meet the stringent requirements of modern industrial environments, ensuring reliable data transmission and ease of use.

Overview of the Mini PushPull Series

HARTING’s Mini PushPull connector series introduces the ix Industrial Ethernet interface for 10Gbit Ethernet with Cat 6A performance in a robust, IP65/IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof design. Standardized according to IEC/PAS 610763124, the ix Industrial mating face in the Mini PushPull series ensures reliable transmission performance and optional power supply via PoE/PoE+.

One feature distinguishing the Mini PushPull series is that its housing is 30 percent shorter than the HARTING PushPull RJ45 (Figure 1), which itself is 70 percent smaller than a standard RJ45 connector. Additionally, the ix Industrial is 75 percent smaller on the board size. These connectors are offered as overmolded cable assemblies, fully shielded, available in Ethernet or signal types, ranging from 0.5m to 5.0m in cable length.

This reduced size allows for more compact and space-efficient device designs. The connector’s locking system emits a clear, audible signal when the connection is securely established, and the integrated security clip can be locked to protect against unintentional pulling and loosening of the plug, ensuring more safety, even when exposed to shock and vibration.

The Mini PushPull ix Industrial series offers versatile connection options (Figure 2) with horizontal, angled, and vertical jack versions for device designs with space and layout constraints that require a more flexible connector orientation. All jacks are optionally available in A and B codings for Ethernet and signals, and the data contacts are designed as SMD contacts, allowing device manufacturers to process the PCB jacks according to the normal reflow soldering process.

Tuesday’s Takeaway

The HARTING Mini PushPull ix Industrial connectors and overmolded cables series bring about a significant advancement in Ethernet and signal interface technology. The ix Industrial Ethernet interface, 10Gbit Ethernet capability, compact design, flexible power options, IP ratings, and robust construction make the Mini PushPull series an excellent, reliable, and high-performance connectivity solution for modern devices and demanding environments.
