New Tech Tuesdays: TDK's Micro Point-of-Load Provide Solutions for Size and Power Design Tommy Cummings

New Tech Tuesdays

Join journalist Tommy Cummings for a weekly look at all things interesting, new, and noteworthy for design engineers.

They're smaller than a grain of rice, but these power modules are ideal for powering CPUs, MCUs, ASICs, FPGAs, DSPs, and other advanced digital logic devices.

TDK μPOL DC-DC Power Modules are highly efficient micro-point-of-load voltage regulators. By integrating an on-chip pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller, integrated MOSFETs, and incorporating inductors and capacitors, the result is an extremely compact and precise power module measuring 3mm x 3.3mm x 1.5mm to 4.9mm x 5mm x 1.6mm. The modules are available with a wide range of input voltages, an adjustable output voltage range of 0.6–2.6V with a 0.5 percent initial accuracy, an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, and continuous current ranges of 3A to 12A with the same package pinout. The built-in protections include:

  • Pre-biased start-up
  • Soft-start protection
  • Over-voltage protection
  • Thermally compensated over-current protection
  • Thermal shut-down with auto-recovery.

In this week's New Tech Tuesday, we'll spotlight TDK's μPOL DC-DC Power Modules that convert power for CPUs, MCUs, ASICs, FPGAs, DSPs, and other advanced digital logic devices.

TDK Makes Design Work Easy

TDK’s best-in-class design efforts have produced fully integrated and highly efficient μPOL DC-DC Power Modules that are easy-to-use for designers. Aspects of their operation, including output voltage and system optimization parameters, can be programmed via the I2C protocol. A proprietary modulator delivers fast transient responses and has internal stability compensation. This means that it can be used in a wide range of applications, with different types of output capacitors, and without loop stability issues. Because the design requires few external components, these highly integrated devices also simplify PCB layout.

The modules also come with easy-to-use starter schematics and design files for free download in multiple formats, depending on design needs. Available formats include OrCAD, Allegro PCB, Mentor, Eagle, KiCAD, and DesignSpark.

These plug-and-play devices reduce system costs and design time and are ideal for industrial applications requiring high power density, such as network communications, servers, and storage. Additionally, these modules are suitable for imaging, radar, security, and medical applications.

Don't Forget the Eval Boards

TDK also offers five evaluation boards for the development of µPOL products. The board features a four-layer printed circuit board constructed of FR4 glass-reinforced epoxy laminate material. The major power components, including the µPOL, are mounted on the top side of the board. Also available is an optional I2C programming dongle.

Tuesday's Takeaway

For micro-form solution designs and high-performance value, TDK's μPOL DC-DC POL converters are ideal. But designers will also appreciate their design-friendly features. The power modules come with starter layout design files for free download in multiple formats and have a plug-and-play design.
