New Tech Tuesdays: TE Connectivity Lights the Way with LUMAWISE Motion Sensors Rudy Ramos

New Tech Tuesdays

Join Rudy Ramos for a weekly look at all things interesting, new, and noteworthy for design engineers.

TE Connectivity's (TE's) LUMAWISE Programmable Motion Sensors stand at the forefront of innovative smart lighting technology, offering excellent precision and efficiency when it comes to street lighting and other outdoor illumination applications. These circular and rectangular detection zone programable sensors represent a significant advancement in lighting control systems, enhancing safety, energy efficiency, and functionality, while their interoperability is enabled by the Zhaga-D4i certification.[1] The LUMAWISE programmable sensors can work as a standalone control device or can be combined with a Zhaga-D4i photocell or communication node for greater control.

The Zhaga Book 18 dual-node architecture, based on the collaboration between the Zhaga Consortium and the DALI Alliance, led to the development of the D4i protocol and certification program, standardizing LED component interfaces and preparing lighting fixtures for the IoT. In addition to making the wiring of the control nodes for lighting fixtures easier, the D4i protocol enables dual-node architecture, which allows the addition of a second node for motion or other sensor types that require a downward-viewing angle and an upward-facing node for photocells or communication.[2]

The Newest Products for Your Newest Designs®

TE's LUMAWISE Motion Sensors are primarily intended for street lighting but can be seamlessly integrated into other area lighting solutions. These motion sensors provide enhanced functionality to satisfy present and future illumination needs, particularly for urban landscapes (Figure 1).

These motion sensors enable energy efficiency by facilitating dimming or even turning off luminaires when not needed, significantly contributing to energy savings. Their two-node architecture ensures robust performance, enhancing reliability and longevity. LUMAWISE Motion Sensors include cutting-edge motion detection technology, providing accurate and responsive control over lighting systems. And their user-friendly design and seamless integration capabilities for installation and operation make them an ideal choice for modern lighting solutions.

LUMAWISE Motion Sensor Options

Depending on the lighting application needs, design engineers can select from the following LUMAWISE options:

  • LUMAWISE Motion Sensor (standard version) is a pluggable device with the standard Zhaga Book 18 interface and a detection zone of 30 × 6 meters designed for street lighting.
  • Motion Sensor Logic Output is the analog version of the LUMAWISE Motion Sensor. The device provides a high signal to a Network Lighting Controller (NLC) to indicate motion has been detected and is available with rectangular and circular detection patterns.
  • Motion Sensor Programmable is the programmable version of the LUMAWISE Motion sensor and allows a user to self-define parameters like brightness levels, on time, and ambient light on and off levels. It is also available with rectangular and circular detection zone lens options.

Precision Motion Detection

The TE LUMAWISE Motion Sensors boast state-of-the-art motion detection capabilities, ensuring precise responsiveness to environmental stimuli. By accurately detecting motion within their field of view, these sensors enable dynamic lighting adjustments, optimizing illumination levels based on real-time activity.

Standardized Connectivity

An integral feature of TE LUMAWISE Motion Sensors is their compatibility with the Zhaga Book 18 interface standard. This standardized interface facilitates seamless integration with a wide range of luminaires and lighting systems, streamlining installation and enhancing interoperability. When paired with an NLC, this interface enables unified control across multiple streets simultaneously, revolutionizing lighting management and maintenance.

Enhanced Energy Efficiency

TE LUMAWISE Motion Sensors play a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency in lighting applications. By dynamically adjusting illumination levels based on detected motion, these sensors minimize energy wastage during periods of low activity while ensuring optimal visibility and safety when needed. This adaptive control mechanism not only reduces electricity consumption but also contributes to sustainability efforts and cost savings.

Tuesday’s Takeaway

TE's LUMAWISE Programmable Motion Sensors offer energy-efficient features and seamless integration, which combine to produce exceptional performance and versatility that completely change the urban street lighting optimization scene. With precision motion detection capabilities, these sensors provide extraordinary sensitivity and accuracy, providing ideal lighting conditions based on real-time environmental cues. Moreover, their solid construction and adherence to industry standards provide reliability and lifespan, even in the hardest conditions, allowing cities and organizations to achieve their sustainable lighting goals with enhanced precision and efficacy.
