ADAS: The Key to Reaching Level-5 Autonomous Vehicles
June 1, 2021 - No longer relegated to science fiction and fantasy, fully autonomous Level-5 vehicles — free from geofencing and capable of going anywhere and doing anything that an experienced human driver can do — may integrate onto our roadways within the next 10 or 20 years. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the primary benefit of vehicle automation will be added vehicle safety. As the technology evolves and automakers progress through the six automation levels on the road to full automation, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are leading the way by providing and delivering an overall better vehicle driving experience.
Level-5 autonomous vehicles (AVs) will likely be electric vehicles (EV) with robust, onboard, fully connected vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems. For these Level-5 AVs to function as envisioned, they will need to be able to seamlessly communicate with other vehicles on the road while simultaneously monitoring the road environment, self-diagnosing their onboard electrical systems, and identifying every potential road hazard — all while keeping passengers safe and comfortable.
Although this futurist outlook of fully autonomous Level-5 EVs is exciting, the reality according to most automotive experts is that this level of vehicle autonomy is still years maybe even decades away. Most of today's new vehicles have Level-1 autonomy integration features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) to help with driving fatigue and nudge drivers back into the lane should they veer off a bit.
Automakers are fast-tracking their efforts into integrating Level-1 systems into true Level-2 ADAS. In Level 2, AVs let the ADAS systems assist with braking and steering functions but still require the driver to be in control and monitor the vehicle's environment, especially in safety-critical situations. The next most significant jump to Level 3 will still require the driver's attention, but that level of automation will allow the vehicle to fully perform safety-critical functions like braking without any significant intervention from the driver through advanced sensor systems like cameras, radar, and light detection and ranging (lidar).
